PROJECT DESCRIPTION
West Kern Community College District issued Colombo Construction Co., Inc., a contract to complete construction and remedial work on the new Student Center at Taft College due to default of contract by the general contractor originally awarded the project.
Amenities of the new 21,000 sf facility include new kitchen, dining/café/student lounge, student game room, bookstore, print shop, mailroom, restrooms and offices.
The location of the Student Center provides both student access from the main campus as well as provides the community street access from Wildcat Way, allowing the building to be used for not only students, but by members of the Taft community. Site work adjacent to the new building was completed to tie into the existing dorms located to the South and the street front to the East. Outdoor dining and lounge activities were programmed into the site work giving the building an open flow between interior and exterior spaces.
Taft College was founded in 1922 as Taft Junior College and is one of the oldest California Community Colleges. Located in Western Kern County, Taft College provides continuous learning opportunities for over 6,000 students through more than 50 vocational and professional degrees, transfer programs and certificates. The District contains 735 square miles and is composed of the Taft City, Midway, McKittrick, Elk Hills Elementary School District, Taft Union High School District and the Maricopa Union District.
